Camping Royale
A twisted fairytale for young & old children!
Camping Royale is a satire on colonialism and the privileged class. It features Queen Sophie-Charlotte and Queen Louise (both lived in 18th century Europe – the former was queen of England, aunt to the latter who was queen of Prussia), embarking on an absurd camping trip, far away from court.
The baroque queens’ attempt to connect with the ‘common people’ is genuine but out of touch with 21st century reality. With only the help of one faithful servant, they have to use their creativity to survive in the wild. Their castle is reduced to basic tents, royal dances have to be executed on muddy grounds, one needs to fish for lunch, battle wild beasts and cope with the unpredictable whims of Mother Nature.
Two worlds collide in this humorous and charming production that combines dance with object theatre. With references to well-known fairy-tales and hilarious audience interactions, Camping Royale is a signature work by CORPUS. It delights children and adults of all ages.
“CORPUS delivers an absurd and satyrical play, a magical moment of theatre, full of tricks that are invented and deconstructed throughout”
Revue Liaison
By transporting the royal world of 18th century Europe to today’s landscape, addressing the gap between the privileged and the popular class, Camping Royale critiques the past to better shape the future.
